[edit] Profile
Loughborough's School of Civil and Building Engineering is one of the largest of its type in the UK.
Loughborough is the largest single-site campus in the U.K. It lies within walking distance of the town itself and is easily accessible by rail. It is close to Junction 23 of the M1 and to East Midlands International Airport.
Independent surveys continue to show that industry continues to hold Loughborough graduates in high regard. The University is renowned for its continued technological innovation, recently winning a fifth Queen's Anniversary Prize. One of these Awards went to the School's Water, Engineering and Development Centre which specialises in work in developing countries.
Independent surveys conducted amongst employers have rated Loughborough University best for its Careers Service and the School as best for construction and civil engineering graduates.
The School has many close links with industry. These include Industrial Advisory Committees, which comment on proposed developments to the teaching programmes, an Industrial Placement Tutor who liaises with companies providing training opportunities for students on sandwich programmes, and consortia of major companies who sponsor programmes and students within the School.
About two thirds of students choose to spend a year on placement in industry. These placements offer an ideal opportunity to put into practice in a working environment the knowledge and experience gained during the early stages of the degree programme. During the placement, engineers or managers nominated by the employer will act as supervisors, and students will be visited by a member of staff. All the training follows the guidelines of the Professional Institution which accredits the programme and students will also be eligible for an additional University award, the Diploma of Industrial Studies.
